In this first episode in our six-part video series, Bob Clagett of I Like to Make Stuff takes on home DIY projects inspired by the features of the new Ford F-150.

When your TV doesn’t exactly go with your room decor, hide it. That’s what a remote-controlled TV lift can do to add more wall space and minimize clutter in your room. In this episode, Clagett demonstrates how to make your own remote-controlled TV lift that automatically rises up from the top of a cabinet and hides away when you’re not using it. Clagett was inspired by the remote tailgate release feature on the Ford F-150, which lowers the truck’s tailgate automatically at the push of a button and makes it easy to load cargo in or out of the truck bed.

Want your own remote-controlled TV lift? Watch the video above and follow these simple steps.

Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Circular saw
  • Cordless drill
  • 48-inch level or straight edge
  • Flat-screen TV
  • Piano hinge
  • Remote-controlled TV lift
  • Cabinet

Step 1: Prep the inside of the cabinet.

Remove any shelves or other features that could get in the way of the TV. This is where you’ll build in your lift.

Step 2: Cut the top piece of the cabinet in half.

To make sure you have a perfect cut, clamp down the level or straight edge lengthwise in the middle of the board. Use the circular saw to cut along the top of the board.

Step 3: Install the piano hinge.

In comparison to separate hinges that are difficult to line up in a straight line, a piano hinge (or continuous hinge) is a series of attached hinges that you can screw into place all at once. First, use the cordless drill to screw the hinges onto the back piece of the cabinet top. Attach this piece to the cabinet by screwing in the other side of the hinges to the back of the cabinet.

Step 4: Install the TV stand.

Use the cordless drill to attach the lift to the cabinet. Most lifts will need to be attached to both the bottom and the back of the cabinet, and the kit should come with hangers that you’ll need to mount to the back of the TV.
